Ulzzang VS Hime Gyaru make-up

See the difference in the eye makeup on my left and right eye?

I'm sure a lot of you have already heard of the term "Ulzzang" and "Gyaru". But, who exactly is ulzzang and gyaru? How similar (or different) are they?

Ulzzang - Ulzzang true definition is "best & "face" = best face in korean. They are basically people with above average looks, sometimes with the use of photoshop and haduri who post their pics online, some becoming internet celebrities.

Gyaru - Its japanese slag for gal. there are many different types of gyaru and they all have they're own distinct awesome fashions! its pretty much a japanese subculture. love fashion? you should look them up. you can learn stuff.

I guess in short, Ulzzang is more Korean style makeup and gyaru, needless to say Japanese style.

Here I'm showing the similarity and difference in ulzzang makeup and gyaru makeup. Ulzzang on the left eye, gyaru on the right.

I'm not a makeup expert but this is solely based on my observations between ulzzang and gyaru makeup and if you have further points to add on, do leave me a comment below =)

1. Both ulzzang and gyaru makeup = big eyes look.

For both ulzzang and gyaru makeup, dolly contact lens is a MUST! Best is those with a black ring to make your eyes more define and big.

See how "watery big" my eyes have become with the contact lens?

2. Both ulzzang and gyaru makeup requires a flawless looking face.

For me, the best way to get a flawless look is to prime the face with a primer, conceal the blemishes then apply foundation.

If I'm using liquid foundation I'll conceal blemishes after foundation then set the makeup with loose powder.

3. Ulzzang uses a darker tone brown brow colour, while gyaru uses a lighter yellowish-tone brow colour.

Here, I'm using the following:

Couleur Inc Eyebrow pencil in Dark Brown 03 (for ulzzang look)

SANA Styling W Brow in SB3 (for gyaru look)

See the difference?

4. Eyeshadow application

For ulzzang:

Prime your eyes with a primer and use a golden brown eyeshadow (best with shimmers) to apply on the whole lid

For gyaru:

Same like ulzzang, prime the eyes and apply a golden brown eyeshadow (I'm using the same colour for this)

BUT!

For gyaru makeup, there's some additional step:

Apply the same golden brown eyeshadow on the outer 1/3 of your lower lid.

Use a darker tone eyeshadow and apply near to the lashes to create a gradient.

The pink dotted line is where the darker brown should be applied, while the purple line is for the golden brown.

Here I'm using:

Primer: Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer (the best primer I've used so far)

Eyeshadow: Loujene 6 colour palette in #03

5. Eyeliner - The major difference that differentiates the two

I looked through quite a few korean and japanese websites and notice this major difference. (Side note: Do you know there's even a gyaru forum for true gyarus and gyaru-wannabes to gather and share information? Interesting!)

Upper lashline's eyeliner:

I'm not very good with words so I reckon that pictures will be the best to describe the major difference.

For ulzzang: The eyeliner is generally thicker as compared to gyaru makeup, being finer only towards the edge of the eye and it should end horizontally with about 1mm extended from your actual eye size.

For gyaru: The eyeliner is thicker only towards the centre of your eye, finer on the inner 1/3 and outer 1/3 of your eye and it should be extended about 3mm from your actual eye size and end going slightly downwards then "flip" with a wing.

You may want to click on the picture to see a clearer picture of what I'm trying to describe =) The thickness of the red lines indicates the thickness of the eyeliner and how it should start and end. And of cos, the 1mm and 3mm description is only an estimate, you don't have to use a ruler and really measures the exact 1mm and 3mm! =P

Lower lashline's eyeliner:

For ulzzang: Line your entire lower lashline and waterline with a black pencil eyeliner andjoin the ends with the upper eyeliner. Your eyes should now look almond-shaped with the inner edge of your eye being rounder and ends sharp. (Imagine an almond with the pointed end being the outer edge of your eye and the rounded end being the inner edge of your eye.)

For gyaru: Extend the inner edge of your eyes downwards with a waterproof liquid eyeliner to create a cat-eye effect (this helps to open up your eyes to look wider) and line your waterline and lower lashline only on the outer 1/3 of your eye (not necessary to join the ends of your upper and lower eyeliner), using a pencil eyeliner. Also, highlight the inner 2/3 of your eye with a light eyeshadow (can be white or very light yellow/gold, depending on your preference).

I personally prefers to use a gel eyeliner to line my upper lashline, then follow by liquid eyeliner to go over and fill in the gaps between lashes and to extend the fine edges (for gyaru makeup) and khol pencil eyeliner for lower lashline and waterline. Of course you can also skip the gel eyeliner part and just use a liquid eyeliner or vice versa, which ever that you're most comfortable with. Some ladies would skip the gel eyeliner but use black eyeshadows to go over liquid eyeliners to prevent the eyeliner from smudging.

Items used:

From top left, clockwise: KATE Gel Eyeliner in BK-3, L.A. Girl Pencil Eyeliner in Smoky, Loujene 6 colour palette in #03, Majolica Majorca Perfect Automatic Liner in BK999

6. False eyelashes and Mascara

Generally, both ulzzangs and gyaru use false lashes but the choice of false lashes is slightly different.

Ulzzangs prefer to use thick, voluminous falsh lashes that fans out while gyarus prefer defining voluminous false lashes that's longer than their actual eye length. Also, gyarus prefer to add lower falsh lashes too.

Do remember that even if you're using false lashes, you need to curl your real lashes and coat a layer of mascara because your real lashes acts like a chair to "seat" the false lashes and keep them in place.

My usual habit is curl lashes -> stick false lashes -> curl again -> apply mascara

I won't be using false lower lashes for gyaru but instead, I'll be applying a mascara base then follow by a lengthening cum volumizing mascara because I can't find my false lower lashes =(

For ulzzang:

For Gyaru:

A quick side-by-side comparison:

Pardon me for the unbalanced eyebrows messy eyebrows because I haven't go for my threading when I was doing this =P

I'm stopping at the eye makeup because basically that's the difference between Ulzzang and Gyaru makeup. Shall no bore you all with steps you already know like how blusher is applied, how lipstick or lip glosses are applied and so on but generally, pink blushes are preferred over coral/peach blushes (for both looks) and nude lips are prefered over all other lip colours. However, peachy orange pink lips are accepted for Ulzzang and sweet light pink lips are accepted for Gyaru.

You can't help but to admit that both Ulzzang and Gyaru makeups really makes your eyes look bigger. (I swear I did not photoshop any of the photos posted!)

Even though it was pass midnight when I was doing this (and both my eyes look different hahaha), I can't help but to camwhore a bit LOLs.

So to end this post, I shall (be long-winded and) add in a few tips:

- It's not necessary to use only browns for both ulzzang and gyaru makeups. Other colours likepinks, greens and gold are accepted too!
- If you're using false lashes for your lower lashline (for gyaru makeup), do remember that the false lashes have to stick as close to the lashline as possible for the inner 1/3 of your eye then gradually lowered till the outer 1/3 of your eye. A thumb of rule is the end of your lower lashline created by the use of false lashes MUST NOT be lower than the lowest point of your upper lashline that you created when you extend the eyeliner or you might create a doppy eye look (and that's not what we want).
- You do not need to use the whole piece of false lashes for your lower lash (for gyaru makeup). To create a more natural look, you can simply coat your lower lashes with a mascara base and few coats of mascara, cut the false lashes into small bits and stick only at the outer 1/3 of your eye. An example would be something like this:

Or you can skip the whole lower false lashes completely but applying mascara is a must.

Last but not least, I shall finish this super long post with a photo that I took just before I was about to remove all my makeup and false lashes are taken off.

This shows exactly how different the eye shape is for ulzzang and gyaru makeup and how a simple thing like eyeliner and mascara can do wonders to your look!
